Baraz-Darak-Hirn

Baraz-Darak-Hirn is the largest military stronghold in Khazural and the primary bulwark guarding the southern approaches to the Elderspine.

More than fifty thousand trained soldiers reside within its walls, supported by a minimal civilian workforce limited to smiths, logisticians, and essential personnel. The hold’s purpose is singular: to safeguard the dwarven realm from threats emerging from the south and to serve as the central training ground for Khazural’s armed forces. Baraz-Darak-Hirn is austere, disciplined, and defined entirely by warcraft. Every hall, forge, and courtyard exists to train, equip, and prepare the dwarven military.

Geography and Structure

The fortress is built into a granite spur at the southern edge of the mountains, overlooking the valleys that stretch toward Myrien. Its architecture is functional and imposing, defined by reinforced stone walls, echoing drill yards, and vertically stacked barracks descending deep into the mountain.

Hirn is never quiet. The sound of drills is constant: hammer strikes in the smith-halls, shield-lines colliding in formation practice, and instructors issuing commands across open courtyards. Every structure is designed for siege endurance. Thick walls, layered choke points, and fire-resistant stonework reflect design principles refined during The Godwar.

The Great Bulwark

South of Baraz-Darak-Hirn lie the ruins of the Great Bulwark, a defensive line that once spanned the entire frontier between Khazural and Valira. Constructed before The Godwar, the Bulwark became the site of some of the bloodiest engagements in dwarven history. Though long shattered, its remains still stand as a symbol of Khazural’s defiance.

Moss-covered battlements rise from the land, scarred by ancient spells and siege engines. The ruins remain accessible, and dwarven veterans make pilgrimage to the Palisades, a monolithic marker where the last defenders of the Third Age made their final stand.

Baraz-Darak-Hirn does not connect to the Bulwark physically, but it inherits its purpose.

Military Function

Hirn serves as both the central training ground for Khazural’s armies and the primary southern defense fortress. All major military formations rotate through the hold during their service. Training encompasses siegecraft and war-engine deployment, formation tactics and shield-line discipline, scoutcraft and tunnel engagement, command instruction, and military engineering.

Many of Khazural’s most successful commanders trace their training lineage back to Hirn.

Leadership

The fortress is commanded by General Baelgrim Stonebrand, a strict tactician known for discipline and precision. Baelgrim is highly respected within Khazural’s military hierarchy and remains fiercely loyal to Baraz-Kronn. His leadership leaves no margin for error. Soldiers are drilled until response becomes instinct.

He is recognized by an obsidian war-mask, a relic earned in battle during his early campaigns.

Role within Khazural

Baraz-Darak-Hirn is one of the most critical strongholds in the dwarven realm. Its dual function, training command structure and defending the southern frontier, makes it indispensable. Although large-scale war has not reached Khazural for generations, Hirn maintains full operational readiness. Strength is maintained as a condition, not a response.

The hold is harsh, ordered, and in constant motion. Its culture is defined by discipline, endurance, and martial purpose. It lacks the grandeur of Baraz-Kronn and the activity of Zulfbar, but commands deep respect across Khazural.

Baraz-Darak-Hirn is the shield Khazural does not lower. A fortress of preparation, memory, and sustained vigilance since The Godwar.
