Baraz-Darak-Sul

Baraz-Darak-Sul is the northernmost dwarven hold in Khazural and the last active watchtower of an ancient defensive ring that once spanned the Elderspine frontier.

Known as The Lonely Tower, it is carved into a frozen precipice overlooking the tundras beyond the mountains. Fewer than five hundred sentinels reside within its walls, forming a small but elite garrison dedicated to safeguarding the northern approaches to Khazural. While its strategic importance has diminished over time, its symbolic and ceremonial role remains central within the Stone Pact.

Location and Structure

Baraz-Darak-Sul is built into the face of a sheer granite cliff, exposed to constant wind and heavy snowfall. The exterior is stark and fortified, defined by narrow observation slits, rune-carved pillars, and high parapets overlooking the tundra for leagues. The interior descends through straight-cut stairways and reinforced chambers designed for endurance rather than comfort.

Its architecture is severe and functional. Hallways are narrow, doorways reinforced, and all spaces are constructed to preserve heat. The hold contains no markets, forges, or civilian districts. Every structure exists for vigilance.

The Frostguard

The hold is manned by the Frostguard, an elite order trained to operate in extreme northern conditions. They wear fur-lined lamellar armor inscribed with glacier-forged runes and wield weapons adapted for cold-weather combat, including halberds and frost-tempered axes.

Their training emphasizes silent movement, long-duration watch, navigation by stars, and winter rites preserved since the First Hallings. Each year, every member carves a single word into their armor, a personal vow known only to them.

The Frostguard operate largely outside conventional dwarven military structures and are regarded as a continuation of older traditions.

Leadership

Baraz-Darak-Sul is commanded by a Warden-Captain rather than a political authority. The current commander, Thrangar Makaisson, is a former rune-order veteran who withdrew north after a blood feud in Baraz-Kronn. He is a reserved and imposing figure, respected within the Frostguard and rarely seen outside the tower.

The Beacon of Sul

At the summit of the tower burns the Beacon of Sul, a crimson magical flame sustained by ancient runes and bound-ember enchantments. It has remained lit for over seven centuries, serving as both a signal and a symbol of continuous vigilance along the northern frontier.

Historic Role

During The Godwar, Baraz-Darak-Sul was one of many towers forming a coordinated northern defensive network. These towers communicated through signal beacons and rune-lines, holding back threats from the tundras beyond the Elderspine. Most were destroyed or abandoned in later Ages. Sul is the only one still active.

Its walls bear carved reliefs of ancient battles, including conflicts against both known and unidentified adversaries. Some depictions include figures and forms no longer recognized in recorded history.

Modern Role

Baraz-Darak-Sul remains the official first line of northern defense, though major incursions are rare. Its presence serves both as an active frontier outpost and as a symbol of Khazural’s continuity. The tower stands as assurance that the northern approach to the Deeproots and the Elderspine remains guarded.

It is also regarded as a remnant of earlier Ages, maintaining watch over threats that may no longer exist, or have yet to return.

Atmosphere and Identity

Baraz-Darak-Sul is silent, windswept, and isolated. The Frostguard maintain older rites and operate under strict discipline. Communication is minimal, and activity is deliberate. The environment and isolation create a persistent sense of tension. Those stationed here describe their role less as guarding the mountains and more as observing them.

Legacy

Baraz-Darak-Sul remains Khazural’s most isolated stronghold and one of its most symbolically significant. It serves as both a functional watchtower and a preserved expression of dwarven vigilance. The tower endures as a constant presence against the northern cold, unchanged in purpose since its founding.
