Baraz-Darak-Uzul
Baraz-Darak-Uzul stands upon the eastern flank of the Elderspine Mountains, where the stone slopes descend into wide valleys and the first hidden arteries of the Deeproots begin. Known as The Deepward Gate, it serves as both the ceremonial threshold into the subterranean world and the primary spiritual site devoted to the ancient traditions governing what lies beneath. It is the smallest of the great dwarven holds, home to fewer than two thousand permanent residents, yet its significance within the Stone Pact far exceeds its size.
Uzul is not a city of commerce or craft. It is a place of silence, devotion, and watchfulness, built to guard the passage into the deepest reaches of Khazural.
Location and Structure
The hold is divided into two distinct halves. The Upper Hold rests upon a natural stone shelf along the mountainside. It houses sentries, gate-masters, and record-keepers who oversee all sanctioned passage into the Deeproots. Constructed from smooth basalt and reinforced with runeseal pillars, it presents a dark, fortified façade to the outside world.
The Lower Vaults lie deep beneath the mountain, sealed behind rune-locked gates and layered halls whose construction predates most known dwarven records. These chambers contain long-closed rooms, aquifer systems, and ancient passages carved in unknown scripts. No expansion has been permitted for generations. The Stonebound maintain that these vaults must remain unchanged. The entire hold is defined by restraint. There are no markets, no taverns, and no leisure districts. Every structure serves a function tied to the safeguarding of the Deeproots.
The Stonebound Order
Baraz-Darak-Uzul is maintained by the Stonebound, one of the oldest religious orders in Khazural. They are not conventional warriors or clerics, but wardens bound to the ceremonial and spiritual protection of the threshold. Their armor is heavy and unadorned, inlaid with obsidian and silver, lacking all personal markings. Their weapons are rune-inscribed warhammers, used as instruments of grounding rather than aggression. Their discipline centers on meditation, glyphwork, and ritual movement. Among the dwarves, the Stonebound are regarded with reverence. Their duty is understood as sacred: to guard what must remain sealed and to uphold oaths whose meanings are no longer fully known.
The Triumvirate of Keepers
Baraz-Darak-Uzul is governed by the Triumvirate of Keepers, a council of three equal authorities.
The Gate-Keeper oversees all movement across the threshold, regulating passage into and out of the Deeproots.
The Oath-Keeper maintains records of vows, treaties, and ceremonial journeys undertaken through the hold.
The Rune-Keeper governs the deeper structures, including the Lower Vaults and the oldest sections of the hold. This figure rarely appears in public.
None of these positions are inherited or elected. Each Keeper is chosen through ritual selection by the Stonebound.
The Mourning Gate
Deep within the lowest levels stands the Mourning Gate. It is a massive sealed structure with no hinges, locks, or visible mechanisms. Its surface is formed of seamless stone, marked by a single handprint and etched with script not recognized in any Khazural archive. Once each year, during the longest night, the gate emits a single deep resonance that carries through the stone of the hold. Its origin and purpose remain unknown. The Mourning Gate is considered the most sacred site in Khazural. The Stonebound maintain constant Vigil over it.
Role in the Deeproots
Baraz-Darak-Uzul serves as the official entry point into the Deeproots network. All movement into the deeper subterranean world, whether military, ceremonial, or logistical, must pass through the Upper Hold and be recorded by the Gate-Keeper’s attendants. Access beyond Uzul is restricted. Even established clans require authorization to send expeditions or pilgrimage groups below.
Through this control, the hold ensures that the deeper regions of Khazural remain regulated and aligned with the ancient oaths governing the Deeproots.
Legacy
Baraz-Darak-Uzul stands as the spiritual gate of Khazural. It embodies dwarven reverence for continuity, restraint, and the preservation of what must not be disturbed. Though small in population, its influence extends across the entire realm.
It remains the keeper of ancient oaths, the guardian of sealed thresholds, and the silent witness to a past that endures beyond memory.
