Stonebound

The Stonebound are an ancient Durazhul monastic order tasked with guarding the deepest thresholds of the Deeproots and preserving the most dangerous silences in dwarven history. Neither priesthood nor military order, the Stonebound exist as a sacred chain of custodians, each member bound to duty, restraint, and the mysteries of The Deep Rhythm. Their foremost charge is the eternal defense of Baraz-Darak-Uzul, where they stand watch over the Mourning Gate, the sealed threshold to Nhal’Vorim, the prison-realm beyond which the dead gods and other ancient horrors were cast.

To the wider world, the Stonebound are feared ascetics and grim spiritual wardens. To the few who understand their true purpose, they are the silent bulwark preventing the Deeproots from swallowing Khazural whole.

Purpose

The Stonebound exist to contain that which must never be released, remembered, or spoken freely. Their primary duty is the defense of the Mourning Gate and the lower reaches of the Deeproots, where ancient horrors, forgotten relics, and sealed evils remain buried beneath the world. Without their vigilance, the deepest regions of the Deeproots would long ago have overrun Khazural.

They do not seek conquest, political influence, or prestige. Their service is one of containment, sacrifice, and eternal watch.

Beliefs and Doctrine

The Stonebound believe silence is the purest path to hearing The Deep Rhythm. To them, speech is interference, noise that drowns the song of the world and blinds the soul to deeper truth. This belief is reinforced by practical necessity: many horrors beneath the Deeproots are blind and hunt by sound, making silence not merely spiritual discipline but survival.

Stonebound doctrine teaches that to hear the world clearly, one must first become quieter than it. Their philosophy centers on restraint, sacrifice, stillness, and the understanding that some burdens must be borne in silence for the sake of all others.

Recruitment and Initiation

Only Durazhul may truly join the Stonebound, though rare Khazal have attempted the path. None are known to have advanced meaningfully through its ranks. No one is recruited. Those who seek the Stonebound must come to them willingly.

Most arrive broken by grief, exile, failure, or the collapse of prior purpose. The Stonebound do not seek strength, talent, or promise. They seek emptiness. The first stage of initiation is known as the Uncarved, during which petitioners are stripped of comfort, voice, and identity, forced to endure silence and austerity until only those fit for binding remain.

Structure

The Stonebound are governed by a flat hierarchical philosophy centered on function rather than prestige. Their order is divided into concentric circles of initiation and duty.

The Uncarved are petitioners undergoing spiritual unmaking, stripped of identity and observed in silence.

The Carved are the fully initiated guardians and wardens of the order, tasked with defending thresholds, witnessing oaths, and maintaining sacred rites.

The Bound are those who surrender selfhood entirely, becoming permanent living sentinels assigned to the deepest vaults and most sacred chambers, often remaining motionless for decades.

The Wordbound are the rarest and most feared among the order, living vessels of forbidden truths and unwritten words too dangerous to preserve by ordinary means.

The Wordbound

The Wordbound serve as living repositories of truths, names, oaths, and knowledge forbidden to written record. Their voices are said to carry the authority of The Deep Rhythm itself. Through lifelong silence and spiritual binding, they become so deeply attuned to the world’s pulse that when they speak, stone is said to listen.

Whether this phenomenon is true divine power, metaphysical resonance, or merely myth remains unknown. Wordbound speak only under the gravest circumstances, including the unsealing of the Mourning Gate, the witnessing of world-shaping legacy, or the declaration of a lineage’s final extinction. Even the Triumvirate cannot command a Wordbound to speak.

Governance

Baraz-Darak-Uzul is governed by the Triumvirate of Keepers, three senior Stonebound who oversee the order and its sacred charge.

The Gate-Keeper governs movement, access, and security.

The Oath-Keeper preserves records of vows, pilgrimages, and sworn obligations.

The Rune-Keeper serves as the highest spiritual interpreter of The Deep Rhythm within the order. Their face is never seen, and their words are never spoken aloud.

One member of the Triumvirate traditionally serves as emissary and advisor to the High King of Khazural on matters concerning the Deeproots and The Deep Rhythm.

Role in Khazural

The Stonebound are formally recognized within Khazural and respected by the High King, though they remain largely separate from political affairs. To the average Khazal, the Stonebound are known only as grim ascetics who dwell in Baraz-Darak-Uzul and guard the eastern entrance to the Deeproots. Their true purpose and the significance of the Mourning Gate are known only to the highest echelons of Khazural leadership.

Among dwarven commonfolk, being “sent to the Stonebound” is a phrase often used in warning, fear, or grim humor.

Reputation

The Stonebound are regarded with a mixture of reverence, fear, and unease. They are respected as holy figures of The Deep Rhythm, but their harsh discipline, near-total silence, and secretive nature place them beyond ordinary social understanding.

To most dwarves, they are not admired. They are endured, feared, and left undisturbed.

Numbers

The true number of Stonebound is not publicly known. Most estimates place their total membership at approximately 500, the overwhelming majority residing within Baraz-Darak-Uzul.
