Belloc Ardane

Belloc Ardane is the long-standing head of Heavy Coin, the wealth-broker guild that controls most trade and financial activity in Ravenhold. Through decades of calculated decisions, he has positioned the guild as the economic foundation of the city.

His authority does not rely on force or visibility. It is exercised through contracts, debt, and dependency. In Grimhold, where power is often measured in strength, Belloc represents a different form of control.

Appearance

Belloc is a stout man in his later years, meticulously groomed and always precisely dressed. His robes are layered and tailored, often threaded with gold in subtle patterns that suggest wealth without display. His head is clean-shaven, his goatee carefully maintained, and his hands adorned with rings that reflect both status and intent. He carries a silver-tipped cane, not for support, but as a deliberate part of his presence.

Every element of his appearance is controlled and intentional.

Personality

Belloc is composed, patient, and consistently measured. He speaks calmly and rarely alters his tone, even in negotiation. He approaches people as assets within a larger system. Some are useful, some are expendable, and most exist somewhere in between. He does not rely on threats or intimidation. Instead, he adjusts circumstances until outcomes align with his interests. To him, loyalty is transactional and trust is a calculated risk.

Role in Ravenhold

Belloc’s influence extends across nearly every aspect of Ravenhold’s economic life. Trade entering the Grimhold Basin, agreements surrounding the harbor, and the flow of coin through guild networks all pass through systems he controls.

Heavy Coin does not maintain an army, yet its financial reach supports much of the city’s infrastructure. Reconstruction after The Godwar, ongoing trade stability, and external relations have all depended on Belloc’s network.

History

Belloc was born into a minor trading family in southern Grimhold. His ability with numbers and negotiation allowed him to advance quickly within Ravenhold’s merchant circles. During the transition into the Third Age, as guild structures formalized, Belloc ensured that Heavy Coin became indispensable. Trade routes were reorganized, debts were leveraged, and agreements were structured in ways that tied the city’s stability to his oversight. He assumed leadership of the guild with minimal opposition and has maintained it through consistency rather than force.

Reputation

Within Ravenhold, Belloc is regarded as both necessary and dangerous. Merchants rely on him. Officials tolerate him. Rivals avoid direct confrontation unless they are certain of the outcome. It is widely understood that Belloc does not need to act openly to influence events. In many cases, the consequences of his decisions are not immediately visible, but they are rarely avoidable.
