Blackram

Blackram is the iron heart of Ravenhold, a mercenary legion forged in the chaotic aftermath of The Godwar. When the Pantheon fell and divine authority collapsed across Arkanthys, Grimhold was left fractured, lawless, and cut off from the stability of the old world. Ravenhold swelled with refugees, scavengers, explorers, and opportunists, but without strong governance the city teetered constantly on the edge of disorder.

It was in this volatile climate that Blackram was founded. Created by veterans of The Godwar, shattered imperial soldiers, and hardened survivors who believed the new age would belong only to those strong enough to impose order upon it, Blackram rose to stabilize Ravenhold through discipline, force, and unbreakable contract law.

Their founding creed remains unchanged:

A contract honored is the only true currency in a broken world.

Today, Blackram stands as the most disciplined martial force in Ravenhold and one of the most influential organizations in all southern Grimhold.

Structure and Function

Blackram operates as a professional mercenary legion under strict military hierarchy. Recruits undergo a year of brutal physical and tactical training before earning the rank of Legionnaire. Only those who prove discipline, competence, and absolute reliability are permitted to wear the legion’s sigil.

The legion’s responsibilities include escorting expeditions into hostile territory, protecting caravans and merchant convoys, recovering relics from dangerous ruins, enforcing contract law within Ravenhold, and defending the city from threats emerging beyond its walls.

Though formally a mercenary company, Blackram’s influence has grown far beyond hired steel. In practice, they function as one of Ravenhold’s principal stabilizing powers.

Seat of Power

Blackram is headquartered in the Iron Bastion, a fortress-barracks dominating Ravenhold’s Bladeshade district. Constructed during the city’s early Fourth Age expansion, the Bastion was built from salvaged Ostagarian stone and reinforced with Grimhold-forged steel. Its architecture is severe and utilitarian, favoring layered defenses, rapid mobilization routes, and hardened internal structures over ornamentation.

The Bastion serves as barracks, armory, training ground, command center, and prison for those who violate Blackram-enforced contracts.

Territory and Presence

Blackram maintains dominant presence throughout the Bladeshade district, where organized force is often the only barrier between order and street-level violence. They also garrison permanent watch-posts along the Saltgates and docks, overseeing caravan security and regulating incoming trade traffic.

Beyond Ravenhold itself, Blackram detachments are frequently contracted across Grimhold to guard expeditions, establish temporary strongholds, and secure dangerous routes through the frontier.

Culture and Creed

Blackram’s internal culture is founded on the belief that mortals must build their own order in the absence of gods. Many within its ranks lost faith, family, or homeland during The Godwar. The legion offers them structure, purpose, and identity in place of what was lost.

Upon promotion to full Legionnaire, members relinquish their former names within legion records. From that moment onward, rank and deed define them, not birth or bloodline.

Their armor bears the ram-skull sigil, symbolizing burden, endurance, and the belief that strength must be carried by one’s own will.

Relations with Other Guilds

Blackram’s dominance within Ravenhold places it in regular conflict with rival organizations. Its patrols and contract enforcement frequently disrupt the covert dealings of the Guild of Hollow-Eyes, creating ongoing hostility between the two powers.

Heavy Coin depends heavily on Blackram to maintain secure trade routes and caravan safety, though its merchants resent the legion’s leverage over commercial logistics.

The Vigil respects Blackram’s effectiveness but views its rigid interpretation of law as dangerous.

Only the Gravetide Company maintains consistently positive relations with the legion, as both groups value discipline, sacrifice, and direct confrontation with Grimhold’s horrors.

Role in the Fourth Age

Since the dawn of the Fourth Age, Blackram has become one of the defining institutions of Ravenhold.

The legion was instrumental in transforming the city from a chaotic refugee haven into a functioning frontier power. It remains deeply involved in nearly every major expedition into Grimhold’s interior and is frequently contracted by the Aurellian Empire for dangerous operations in the north.

Though not a state military force, Blackram’s influence rivals that of minor noble houses elsewhere in Arkanthys.

Legacy

Blackram is widely regarded as proof that order can exist without divine mandate.

To its admirers, the legion represents discipline, reliability, and the triumph of mortal will over chaos. To its critics, it is a mercenary regime cloaked in ideals, enforcing power through steel while pretending at virtue.

Regardless of opinion, none deny its importance. Ravenhold would not be what it is today without Blackram.
