House Dornbraeth
House Dornbraeth is one of the Five Great Forgehouses of Khazural and the living embodiment of the Echo of Shape, the foundational principle of structure, form, and deliberate creation. As masters of architecture, stonecraft, and structural engineering, Dornbraeth oversees the design and construction of Khazural’s greatest fortresses, bridges, vaults, and monuments.
Among the Five Forgehouses, Dornbraeth is regarded as the most foundational. Their work forms the literal skeleton of dwarven civilization, and many within the house believe that all other powers in Khazural stand only because Dornbraeth first gave them something upon which to stand.
The house is currently led by Velmir Dornbraeth, a blind master-architect said to perceive structure through glyph-resonance and the harmonic language of stone.
Philosophy and Doctrine
House Dornbraeth teaches that to shape is to rule. Its members believe the act of creation is the purest expression of power, and that permanence is achieved only through flawless construction. To them, imperfect work is not merely incompetence but sacrilege, a failure to honor The Deep Rhythm through proper form.
The guiding creed of the house is:
“Shape, or be shaped.”
This philosophy extends beyond architecture into politics, warfare, and personal conduct. Dornbraeth teaches that those unwilling to impose order upon the world will inevitably be shaped by stronger hands.
Duties and Authority
House Dornbraeth controls the majority of large-scale construction, infrastructure, and structural planning throughout Khazural. No fortress, royal vault, bridge, gate, or major public work is constructed without Dornbraeth oversight or influence. They maintain authority over state architects, master masons, engineering guilds, and structural rune-design across the realm.
Their standards define architectural law throughout Khazural, and their ancient blueprints remain foundational to most dwarven construction practices.
The Bulwark
House Dornbraeth’s greatest achievement is the Bulwark, the colossal anti-magic mountain wall separating Khazural from the western realms.
Constructed during the Third Age in response to Valiran expansion, the Bulwark stretches for miles across the mountain frontier and remains one of the greatest feats of mortal engineering in recorded history. More wall than fortress, it stands as both a defensive barrier and a declaration of dwarven defiance.
Within Dornbraeth, the Bulwark is regarded as the pinnacle expression of the house’s philosophy: proof that stone, shaped perfectly, can halt even empire.
Internal Culture
Members of House Dornbraeth are relentless perfectionists. They are raised under exacting standards where flaws are corrected harshly and mediocrity is treated with contempt. Precision, patience, and technical mastery are expected in all things, from architecture to speech to political maneuvering.
House members tend to be stoic, deliberate, and highly critical. Both of others and of themselves. Praise within Dornbraeth is rare and hard-earned.
To them, excellence is not virtue. It is minimum expectation.
Rituals and Practices
Young scions of Dornbraeth undergo the Pillared Rite, during which they must design and carve a structurally flawless pillar before reaching adulthood. Failed works are destroyed and buried. Successful pillars are installed within the Great Hall of Measures, where they stand among generations of ancestral craft.
Every Dornbraeth heir bears a Keystone Name, a secondary ancestral name tied to a structural work laid by their forebears.
Master architects of the house also preserve Stone-Speech, a secret symbolic language of chisel-marks and micro-runes embedded within their structures, readable only by true Dornbraeth artisans.
Political Position
House Dornbraeth maintains formal loyalty to the crown but views itself as the physical foundation upon which Khazural rests. Though publicly respectful toward House Zarak-Vorr’s rule, relations between the two houses are strained. Dornbraeth quietly resents the growing dominance of Zarak-Vorr and considers the current throne increasingly dependent on powers it did not build.
Among the Five, Dornbraeth sees itself not merely as one house among equals, but as the stone upon which the others stand.
Reputation
House Dornbraeth is respected throughout Khazural for its unmatched engineering and craftsmanship. They are also widely regarded as arrogant, obsessive, and intolerant of imperfection. To work under Dornbraeth patronage is prestigious but notoriously brutal, with standards few can meet and fewer survive comfortably.
Even rival houses admit a simple truth:
If Dornbraeth built it, it will outlast kingdoms.
