House Thaldrazan

House Thaldrazan is one of the Five Great Forgehouses of Khazural and the living embodiment of the Echo of Endurance, the foundational principle of time, trial, erosion, and transformation through pressure. As custodians of the Ashvaults, keepers of unstable relics, and major contributors to Khazural’s military command structure, Thaldrazan wields influence through both force and the hoarding of dangerous power.

Among the Five Forgehouses, Thaldrazan is regarded as the most openly militarized. Its members occupy numerous senior positions throughout Khazural’s standing armies, and its vaults contain some of the most dangerous relics in dwarven possession.

The house is currently led by Thorek Thaldrazan, known as the Warchief of Cinders.

Philosophy and Doctrine

House Thaldrazan teaches that true worth is forged only through hardship. To them, suffering is not misfortune but refinement. Time, pressure, and adversity are sacred forces that strip weakness away and reveal strength beneath. Anything that cannot endure trial deserves to break.

Their central doctrine is expressed in the house creed:

“We fall forward.”

Unlike the idealized endurance preached publicly, however, many within the house interpret this philosophy less as wisdom and more as justification for ruthless pursuit of strength.

Duties and Authority

House Thaldrazan controls the Ashvaults, the great sealed repositories where dangerous, sacred, magical, and cursed relics are stored beneath Khazural. Officially, the house claims stewardship over such relics to protect the realm from misuse.

In practice, Thaldrazan has developed a reputation for aggressively acquiring volatile artifacts and ancient powers under the pretense of containment. Many believe the house hoards these relics less out of caution than out of strategic ambition. Few challenge them openly. No one is eager to provoke the house that controls the realm’s most dangerous vaults.

Military Influence

House Thaldrazan maintains deep influence within the military apparatus of Khazural. Though not the formal rulers of the standing army, they provide a disproportionate number of officers, strategists, commanders, and war-leaders across nearly every branch of dwarven military service.

Thaldrazan believes political titles are meaningless without force to uphold them.

Within the house, it is commonly said:

“A crown without steel is ornament.”

Their military influence grants them enormous leverage in politics, relic acquisition, and territorial matters.

Internal Culture

House Thaldrazan is intensely militarized and hierarchical. Its members are raised in a culture of discipline, competition, and relentless pressure. Weakness is tolerated only as a temporary state to be overcome. Failure is accepted only if it produces strength through survival.

They prize resilience, martial competence, ambition, and personal toughness above all else. Within the house, comfort is viewed with suspicion and softness with contempt.

Greed and Criticism

Though Thaldrazan publicly frames itself as protector of dangerous power, many view the house as dangerously greedy.

They are infamous for sacrificing soldiers, laborers, and expeditionary forces in pursuit of relics, ruins, and forgotten power. Entire battalions have reportedly been expended securing vaults or ancient sites deemed strategically valuable.

To Thaldrazan, lives are temporary.

Power endures.

This ruthless pragmatism has earned them both fear and resentment across Khazural.

Rituals and Practices

Thaldrazan relics are not cleared for storage until subjected to extended observation within the Ashvaults, where their effects are studied through decay, erosion, and long-term containment.

Their members practice Hourbinding, a ritual in which oaths are sealed beneath slow-hardening wax and only fulfilled once the seal naturally cracks.

During major ceremonies, house members mark themselves with Ash Remembrances, powdered remains of failed ancestors worn upon the brow as proof that failure itself carries value if endured.

Political Position

House Thaldrazan shows little reverence for the throne beyond what its strength can enforce. Though publicly loyal to High King Barador, the house regards kingship as secondary to military and strategic power. Their influence rests not in royal favor, but in the reality that Khazural’s armies and relic-vaults cannot function without them.

Among the Five Forgehouses, Thaldrazan is widely considered one of the most dangerous not because it rules, but because it may not need to.

Reputation

House Thaldrazan is respected for its strength and feared for its ambition. To common dwarves, they are warlords, vault-keepers, and commanders of brutal necessity.

To rival houses, they are opportunists who hoard dangerous power while preaching restraint. Many believe that if any house were ever to challenge the throne by force, it would be Thaldrazan.
