Valerius Thane Ormont

Valerius Thane Ormont was the third Archmage of Altarra Tower, ruling eighty-nine years after the death of Pyro Carraden. His tenure marked the most politically volatile period in the Tower’s history. Unlike his predecessors, Ormont was not defined by mastery of arcane theory or containment architecture. He was a political operator. His rise to Archmage came through influence, negotiation, and alignment with Imperial interests rather than through foundational magical work. His leadership is widely regarded as the most controversial in the history of Altarra Tower.

Rise to Power

Ormont emerged from within Altarra’s administrative circles rather than its upper research ranks. He cultivated relationships with Imperial governors, trade ministers, and noble houses long before seeking the Archmage’s seat. When the Seat of Five elected him, it was viewed as a stabilizing political decision rather than an academic one. Imperial support increased, funding expanded, and access to restricted research was gradually loosened. Within the Tower, however, concern was immediate and persistent. Ormont held a different view of Altarra’s purpose. He believed the Tower should not merely contain relics, but make use of them.

Under his leadership, vault access protocols were relaxed. Research shifted toward applied usage. Imperial observers were granted limited but unprecedented oversight. Financial structures were introduced to support controlled relic deployment. He argued that relics were tools, not burdens to be sealed away. This position stood in direct opposition to the containment doctrine established by Pyro Carraden.

The Vault Crisis

During the later years of Ormont’s rule, a series of containment irregularities emerged within Pyro’s Vault. Several relic seals degraded at accelerated rates, and arcane feedback events increased in frequency. No catastrophic breach occurred, but internal records indicate that at least one relic approached complete destabilization of its containment structure. No formal blame was ever assigned. Within Altarra, however, the cause was widely understood. The phrase “Ormont’s Folly” entered common use during this period.

Death

Valerius Thane Ormont died under unclear circumstances. Official Imperial records cite natural causes. Unofficial accounts vary. Some suggest internal political retaliation. Others speak of relic backlash or arcane sabotage. No definitive explanation has ever been confirmed. Following his death, stricter containment protocols were reinstated immediately.

Legacy

Ormont is remembered as the most divisive Archmage in Altarra’s history. He did not advance arcane understanding. He did not reinforce the Tower’s foundations. He altered its direction. His tenure brought Altarra closer to becoming an instrument of power rather than a structure of containment. Though no catastrophe occurred under his rule, he is widely regarded as the only Archmage to bring Pyro’s Vault near structural failure. His successor inherited a Tower that was divided, cautious, and no longer certain of its own purpose.
