Needles
Needles is a dead forest located north of Ravenhold along the southern slopes of the Icethorn Peaks. Once entirely barren, it remains one of the most unsettling regions in southern Grimhold: a skeletal woodland of towering branchless trunks rising like spears from frozen earth.
For generations, Needles stood as a monument to tragedy, a forest killed not by war nor winter, but by its own protector.
Since the restoration of Thirion, the Nature Spirit of Grimhold, the forest has begun a slow and uncertain recovery. Though much of Needles remains dead and silent, signs of life have returned near its heart for the first time in ages.
Geography and Appearance
Needles stretches across the lower slopes of the Icethorn Peaks, its outer reaches still dominated by dense clusters of lifeless trunks stripped bare of branch and leaf. The trees stand unnaturally straight and narrow, blackened by age and curse alike. In winter they resemble spears driven into the earth. In summer they cast no shade.
The forest floor is carpeted in brittle dead needles and splintered bark that never fully decays. Walking through the outer forest sounds like stepping across shattered bone. Closer to the Heartwood, however, the land has begun to change.
Fresh moss creeps across once-frozen stones. Sparse green shoots emerge between the dead roots. Small clusters of saplings and underbrush have begun to appear in scattered patches, fragile and uncertain against the endless cold.
Wildlife
For centuries, Needles held no life. No birds nested in its trunks. No predators hunted beneath its dead canopy. No insects stirred in its soil. That silence has begun to break.
Small animals have returned to the lands nearest the Heartwood: hares, foxes, birds, and scattered deer. Yet they rarely stray far from the forest’s center.
The outer reaches remain lifeless. Whether Needles can ever fully recover beneath Grimhold’s endless winter remains unknown.
Culture and Beliefs
Among the Skarnn, Needles is a place of reverence, sorrow, and caution. They do not hunt there lightly. They do not build within its bounds. They do not raise their voices beneath its trees.
Many still regard the forest as sacred ground marked by divine grief. Children are taught that those who violate the balance of nature will hear the sorrow of Needles in their dreams.
Ravenholders often warn travelers:
“Do not follow the voices in the Needles.”
Legacy
Though its curse has been broken, Needles remains a scar upon Grimhold. To some, it is proof that even spirits may fall to grief. To others, its slow rebirth stands as proof that not all wounds are permanent.
Whether the forest will one day live again, or die a second death beneath the endless frost, remains unknown.
