Rauði Anvarr-The Red Snow

Rauði Anvarr, commonly known as the Red Snow, is a sanctioned martial institution within Nifleheim responsible for mediating blood grievances, personal vendettas, and escalating feuds among the Skarnn. Neither clan authority nor formal court, it exists as an ancient customary body empowered to intervene when private conflict threatens wider stability.

Its purpose is simple: no grievance may be allowed to grow into clan bloodshed. Its authority predates the modern Jarldom and survives because every ruler understands its necessity.

Purpose

Rauði Anvarr exists to prevent cycles of vengeance from spiraling into generational blood feud. When disputes cannot be resolved through the Arena, clan mediation, or customary law, the matter may be brought before the Red Snow.

Its members investigate the grievance, hear both parties, determine fault, and attempt resolution through mediated settlement, sanctioned duel, compensation, or ritual closure. If one side refuses judgment or continues unlawful retaliation, Rauði Anvarr intervenes directly.

Authority and Enforcement

Though not formally above clan law, Rauði Anvarr is culturally recognized as the final arbiter in unresolved blood grievance. To reject its judgment is to declare oneself outside accepted Skarnn custom.

When defiance occurs, Rauði Anvarr is authorized by tradition to execute the offending party and any who knowingly shield them. This authority is rarely challenged.

Even powerful clans hesitate to oppose them openly, as doing so risks legitimizing endless retaliatory violence.

Membership

Membership is by invitation only. Candidates are chosen for exceptional endurance, discipline, emotional restraint, and proven ability to endure violence without surrendering to it.

Rauði Anvarr does not recruit berserkers or glory-seekers. Its members are selected for their capacity to stand amid hatred without being ruled by it.

Acceptance is voluntary. Members hold no formal rank beyond situational seniority.

Authority within the institution is based on judgment, experience, and proven enforcement record.

Practices and Procedure

When a grievance is submitted, Rauði Anvarr conducts private inquiry into the matter.

Witnesses may be questioned. Evidence gathered. Clan testimony reviewed. Once judgment is reached, the Red Snow prescribes resolution.

This may take the form of: Compensation or restitution, formal apology or oath-binding, sanctioned duel or trial of endurance and execution in cases of severe dishonor or repeated offense.

Its proceedings are private. Its judgments are final.

Relationship with Nifleheim

Rauði Anvarr exists by the consent of the Jarl but operates independently of direct political control. The Jarl may overrule them in theory.

In practice, this is almost never done. To interfere without cause would undermine the institution that prevents feuds from consuming the realm.

Reputation

Among common Skarnn, Rauði Anvarr is feared and respected in equal measure. Its arrival means a conflict has grown dangerous enough to threaten more than those directly involved.

Among warriors, being summoned before the Red Snow is a grave matter. It means one’s grievance has passed beyond personal dispute and entered the realm of communal consequence.

Cultural Context

To the Skarnn, Rauði Anvarr embodies a central truth of northern life.

Wrath is natural. Vengeance is understandable, but blood without end destroys all.

The Red Snow exists so that hatred may end somewhere.
