The Aurellian Dynasty

The Aurellian Dynasty is the ruling bloodline established after The Godwar, marking the beginning of mortal rule over Arkanthys. It begins with Gabriel Aurellian, who took the Pale Crown at the end of the war and accepted the burden of leadership that came with it. The dynasty is defined by a single principle.

Rule belongs to the one who bears the Cinderbrand.

From its founding to the present year, 4A 502, the Aurellian Dynasty has shaped the political structure of the world. Its rulers are remembered differently across generations, but its authority has always been tied to the mark left by the Crown itself.

The First Emperor

After the fall of the Pantheon, Gabriel Aurellian did not intend to rule. The Pale Crown remained as the last remnant of divine authority. Leaving it unclaimed would have allowed its power to fall into the hands of others. Gabriel chose to take it upon himself.

When he donned the Crown, it marked him. The mark burned into his body and remained with him for the rest of his life. He named it the Cinderbrand. It was a visible sign that the Crown was never meant for mortals. It carried weight, strain, and consequence. Gabriel accepted the title of Emperor with that understanding. At the time, he had no empire to rule. The Aurellian Empire would be built later, beginning in Targon.

Gabriel I ruled from 4A Y1 to 4A Y190, a reign extended far beyond a normal lifespan due to the influence of the Crown.

The Cinderbrand

The Cinderbrand became the foundation of succession. It does not follow birth order. It does not follow lineage directly. It appears on a member of the Aurellian bloodline and marks them as the next ruler. The mark can manifest at birth or later in life. There is no fixed moment or pattern. Because of this, succession is not always immediate or predictable. The first known transfer occurred with Elira Aurellian, Gabriel’s daughter, who bore the mark and became Empress after his death.

From that point forward, the rule of the empire followed the presence of the Cinderbrand. The mark determines who must rule.

Because the Cinderbrand does not follow a fixed pattern, the dynasty has experienced periods of uncertainty. When a ruler dies, the next bearer of the mark is not always immediately known. In some cases, the mark appears after a delay. In others, it manifests in a distant branch of the bloodline.

These gaps create moments of instability within the empire. The death of Isolde I ended the first direct line of Gabriel’s descendants. The Crown passed into another branch of the family. Similar transitions occurred in later generations, often accompanied by internal tension and political maneuvering.

Despite this, the system remained intact. Authority always resolved around the bearer of the mark.

Later Generations

After Gabriel I, the dynasty continued through multiple branches of his bloodline.

Some rulers held power for decades. Others ruled briefly. The stability of the empire often reflected the strength and presence of the current bearer of the Cinderbrand. One of the most notable disruptions occurred during the reign of Gabriel II, who ruled for only a single year before dying under unclear circumstances.

Over time, the line narrowed. Several rulers died without heirs. The number of viable successors decreased with each generation. The final confirmed ruler of the Aurellian Dynasty is Uriel III, who ruled from 4A Y441 to 4A Y489.

He was assassinated in Vai’Luthra, the capital of Myrien.

Uriel III died without children.

At the time of his death, no known member of the Aurellian bloodline bore the Cinderbrand. For the first time since the founding of the empire, the throne stood vacant. As of 4A 502, the mark has not reappeared.

Members of the Aurellian family still exist. Some lines continue. There are those who expect children, and with them the possibility that the Cinderbrand will manifest again.

Until that happens, the empire exists without a crowned ruler.
