Clan Stoltengard is one of the four major Skarnn clans of Nifleheim and the only clan whose ancestral seat survived the Skarnn rebellion against Ostagar in the First Age. Their endurance during that war forged their reputation as the unbroken clan, and to this day their survival remains one of the defining symbols of Skarnn resilience.

Second only to Clan Grimwulf in political influence and military power, Stoltengard rivals its counterpart in discipline, training, and martial prestige.

Territory

Stoltengard controls the western frontier of Skarnn lands, stretching from the northern reaches of Ravenwood through the western White Border and toward the cold western shores. Their seat of power, Stoltengard Keep, stands atop the wind-scarred slopes of the Antler Hills, a rugged highland region whose terrain defines both the clan’s homeland and its emblem.

The elevated terrain grants the clan natural defensive advantages and constant visibility over surrounding lands, reinforcing their long tradition of vigilance and frontier defense.

Leadership

Clan Stoltengard is led by Sigrid Stoltengard, an unmatched huntress, battlefield commander, and warden of the frontier regarded as one of the most formidable leaders in the Skarnn homelands. Her authority stems not solely from bloodline, but from personal merit earned through years of warfare, hunting, and command.

She rules directly and without intermediary councils, maintaining strict adherence to Stoltengard’s traditions of discipline and personal responsibility.

Sigrid remains unmarried, making her one of the most politically sought-after figures in Nifleheim. Numerous marriage offers from rival and allied clans alike have been refused.

Military Strength

Stoltengard fields the most disciplined and professionally trained fighting force among the Skarnn clans. Though Grimwulf commands larger numbers, Stoltengard warriors are widely considered superior in formation warfare, tactical discipline, battlefield cohesion, and sustained engagement.

Their military doctrine emphasizes precision, endurance, and coordinated force over brute aggression. Their soldiers are trained to outlast rather than overwhelm.

Traditions

Stoltengard traditions center on vigilance, self-control, and resilience. The most sacred rite of adulthood is the Winter Vigil, during which initiates must stand alone in the Antler Hills through an entire winter night without fire or shelter. They must endure the cold, the isolation, and the unseen terrors of Grimhold’s wilderness without abandoning their post. Failure is considered dishonorable, though not ruinous. Those who falter are expected to repeat the rite until they succeed.

Warriors also swear the Antler Oath, carving the clan’s sigil into their weapons as a binding pledge to defend Stoltengard lands and uphold its law. Breaking this oath is punishable by permanent exile.

Relations with Other Clans

Stoltengard’s relationship with Clan Grimwulf is defined by mutual respect and longstanding rivalry.

Though they recognize Grimwulf’s authority over the Jarlship, many within Stoltengard believe their own bloodline holds equal claim to leadership, particularly given the clan’s historic endurance and military prestige.

Disputes over White Border territory further strain relations.

Stoltengard maintains close alliance with Clan Karvandar, whose naval strength complements their frontier land defenses. The two clans frequently cooperate on patrols, hunts, and regional defense.

Relations with Clan Vossk remain neutral and distant.

Stance Toward the Empire

Stoltengard has little interest in the broader politics of Arkanthys beyond matters that directly affect Skarnn sovereignty.

Unlike Grimwulf, they do not advocate open hostility toward the Empire or its agents unless Skarnn lands are threatened directly.

Their focus remains internal: preserving Nifleheim, defending their borders, and maintaining stability among the clans.

Their ancestral legitimacy grants them immense cultural weight among the Skarnn, while their extensive preservation stores make them the logistical backbone of the northern clans.

Stoltengard Keep contains the largest reserve of preserved provisions in Nifleheim, including salted meats, dried fish, traded grain, and frost-cellared stores built to survive the harshest winters.

This makes the clan indispensable during famine or prolonged winter and grants them significant leverage in inter-clan politics.
