Stoltengard Keep

Stoltengard Keep is the ancestral stronghold and capital of Clan Stoltengard, carved directly into the eastern cliffs of the Antler Hills. The fortress is integrated into the mountain itself. Its foundations descend into the rock, while its walls and towers rise from the cliff face as if formed from it. It is regarded as one of the most secure structures in Grimhold, defined by its defensive design, its sustained readiness, and its unbroken record in siege.

Location and Geography

The keep occupies a high position along the eastern ridges of the Antler Hills, a region marked by steep inclines, fractured stone, and narrow passes. Access is limited to a single ascending route that winds through the terrain. The approach crosses exposed bridges over deep ravines and climbs through controlled switchbacks. The path is narrow, fully visible from above, and easily defended.

All other approaches are obstructed by natural barriers. The surrounding hills are cold, exposed, and largely devoid of vegetation.

Architecture and Design

Construction relies almost entirely on locally quarried stone. The fortress presents a continuous surface with minimal material contrast, reinforcing the impression that it is part of the mountain. Curtain walls are reinforced by narrow vertical towers built into the structure. These towers function as observation points and defensive platforms, forming a serrated outer profile along the cliff.

Wood is used only where necessary within interior supports. External ornamentation is absent. No runic work or symbolic carving is present. Structural precision and material strength define the design.

Braziers are maintained along the walls and towers at all times. At night, the perimeter forms a continuous ring of fire visible across the hills.

Military Presence and Doctrine

The keep maintains a unified standing force trained under a single doctrine. Training is conducted daily within stone-cut courtyards and terraced drill grounds. Instruction focuses on formation discipline, defensive positioning, coordinated response, and terrain control.

There is no distinction between elite and standard units. All warriors are trained to the same standard and operate as a cohesive formation. The force is structured for defense rather than expansion. Its purpose is to hold position under sustained pressure.

Stoltengard Keep has never been taken. During the Ostagar campaigns, it remained intact when other positions failed.

Leadership and Population

The keep is governed by Sigrid Stoltengard. Authority is centralized and enforced through direct command rather than delegation. Stability is maintained through consistency of leadership and adherence to established doctrine.

The population consists of warriors, craftsmen, hunters, and support personnel. Settlement density is high, with living and operational spaces integrated within the same structure. Members of the Elegy are present to oversee burial rites and maintain funerary chambers. Their presence is limited to defined roles within the keep.

Food Stores and Logistics

The keep maintains the largest preserved food reserves within the Skarnn territories. Storage systems were expanded following the Ostagar campaigns. Supplies are held in subterranean vaults, including granaries, smokehouses, and sealed chambers. Inventory is continuously maintained and rotated. The system is designed to support long-term isolation under siege conditions.

Culture and Atmosphere

The external character of the keep is controlled and austere. Routine is defined by training cycles, maintenance, and operational readiness. Behavior is regulated by discipline and expectation. Internal culture emphasizes reliability, cohesion, and mutual dependence. Communal spaces are functional, with limited variation from standard design. The fortress operates as a closed system. Every individual function supports its continued defense and sustainability.
