The Smiling Knife is the elusive leader of the Guild of Hollow Eyes, Ravenhold’s intelligence network and most secretive organization. No one knows their true name, lineage, or even gender. They exist as rumor, speculation, and careful avoidance, yet their influence reaches every corner of the city.

Under their leadership, the Hollow Eyes evolved from a loose band of informants into a structured network of spies, infiltrators, and operatives. They move where guards cannot, learn what others hide, and uncover threats long before they surface. Ravenhold tolerates them because the alternative is blindness.

Appearance

The Smiling Knife is a thin, androgynous figure draped in layered black silks that move without sound. They wear a silver mask at all times, smooth and featureless except for a permanently etched grin. No one has seen what lies beneath. Their posture is controlled, their movement deliberate. They glide rather than walk, and their presence grows more unsettling the longer it lingers. Some claim the mask shifts subtly with their mood. No one has confirmed it. Their voice is soft, melodic, and measured. Every word is delivered with precision, as if conversation itself is a performance.

Personality

The Smiling Knife is polite, deliberately so. They speak in implication rather than clarity, offering fragments instead of answers. Directness is reserved for moments when it serves a purpose. They do not threaten. They imply. Their tone leaves listeners uncertain whether they are being reassured, warned, or marked. They value subtlety, control, and misdirection. They show no tolerance for incompetence or noise.

Role in Ravenhold

The Smiling Knife directs all intelligence operations within the city. This includes infiltration of hostile groups, surveillance of smugglers, cults, and foreign agents, internal threat analysis, discreet negotiation, and the removal of individuals deemed too dangerous to remain. The Hollow Eyes operate alongside Vigil and, when necessary, the Blackram, but never under them.

The Smiling Knife also serves as a shadow diplomat, handling matters that cannot exist in formal channels. Their reach extends into Skarnn clans, mercenary networks, and elements within the Empire, including Ordo Dominus.

History

The Smiling Knife appeared in Ravenhold roughly a century after the fall of Ostagar, already wearing the same silver mask. At the time, the Hollow Eyes were fragmented and directionless. Their consolidation under this figure occurred quickly and without visible conflict. In the years that followed, multiple threats against Ravenhold disappeared without trace. Foreign infiltrators, internal conspiracies, and cult networks collapsed or went silent. No records explain how.

Some believe the Smiling Knife has lived far longer than they appear. Others claim the mask has passed between individuals. The guild denies both.

Reputation

Within Ravenhold, the Smiling Knife is spoken of in lowered voices. Some see a necessary protector. Others see an unseen executioner. No one knows what they are.
