Varys Aurellian
Varys Aurellian was the father of Gabriel Aurellian and a factory worker in Ostagar during the final decades of the Third Age. He held no position of authority and left no formal record beyond his family, yet his life reflects the conditions under which much of the population lived during the final years of divine rule. He is remembered primarily through his influence on Gabriel and the values he carried: discipline, restraint, and a belief in the dignity of labor.
Appearance
Varys was broad and physically worn from years of labor. His hands were marked by repetitive work, and his posture reflected long hours spent in industrial environments.
His clothing was simple and repeatedly repaired. He often carried the residue of his work with him, the smell of metal and machinery remaining long after his shifts ended.
Personality
Varys was quiet, patient, and steady. He avoided conflict where possible and was known to remain composed under strain. He valued fairness and consistency, and he approached hardship without outward resentment. Those close to him described him as reliable rather than outspoken, a man who endured rather than resisted.
Life and Work
Varys spent most of his life working in the industrial districts of Ostagar. His labor supported early arcane infrastructure until those systems were displaced by temple construction ordered by the Pantheon’s clergy. When industrial work was dismantled, Varys and his wife Aria were conscripted into unpaid labor. Their work shifted from sustaining their own livelihood to maintaining structures that did not benefit them.
During this period, Gabriel fell ill. Varys attempted to secure aid through both labor and petition, but access to clerical healing remained restricted. Gabriel survived, though permanently marked by the illness.
Role in Gabriel’s Life
Varys did not take part in the rebellion, but his influence remained present in Gabriel’s actions. His emphasis on discipline, restraint, and responsibility carried forward into Gabriel’s leadership. The sword he owned, a simple iron weapon, was later carried by Gabriel during the early stages of the rebellion.
Death
Varys Aurellian died before the events that led to the rebellion. He passed in his home, after years of labor, without witnessing the changes that would follow. Gabriel later described him as a man who endured his life without breaking, a description that would shape how he remembered him.
