Althea Aurellian was the wife of Gabriel Aurellian and the first Empress of the Aurellian Empire. Born in Ostagar and trained in healing, she became one of the defining figures of the rebellion and the early imperial order, not through warfare or command, but through endurance, compassion, and political steadiness.

Her life was shaped by service, personal loss, and a sustained commitment to the dignity of ordinary people. After Gabriel’s crowning, she ruled beside him for thirty-one years and played a central role in stabilizing the early empire.

She is remembered as one of the moral foundations of the Aurellian age and as the figure who gave the new empire much of its human character.

Early Life

Althea was born in the lower districts of Ostagar to a family of herbalists. From an early age she was taught the practical disciplines of healing, including the preparation of poultices, salves, and distilled remedies, as well as the treatment of wounds through observation, patience, and care. She later entered the auxiliary healer’s program of the Scriptorium, where she met Gabriel Aurellian. Their relationship began quietly and developed over time through shared work, similar convictions, and the conditions of life in the city.

Althea did not seek rank or recognition. Her early life was defined by service to those who could not afford better care and by a growing awareness of how completely divine institutions had failed the people they claimed to guide.

Althea and Gabriel married while still young and lived modestly in Ostagar. Their first child, Maya, was born prematurely and survived only a short time. Althea used all the healing knowledge available to her in an effort to preserve the child’s life. When Maya stopped breathing, she and Gabriel carried her to the Temple of Ylara and pleaded for clerical aid. The refusal they received, and the justification given for it, became one of the defining events of both their lives.

Maya died soon after. Althea rarely spoke of the event afterward, but its effect remained permanent. It marked the point at which personal grief and political reality became impossible to separate.

The Rebellion

When Gabriel became a target of Oculus and was taken to Ocularis, Althea remained in Ostagar under threat and uncertainty until his escape. She later fled the city and rejoined him at Caellbruck Hold. During the rebellion, Althea served primarily as a healer. She treated wounded partisans, civilians, and refugees displaced by the violence of the conflict. Her work was not symbolic. It was immediate, practical, and constant, and it became essential to the endurance of the rebellion in its hardest periods.

Though she never held military command, her presence carried significant weight. She was trusted widely, and her steadiness helped preserve cohesion among people living under extreme strain.

Empress

After the fall of the Pantheon and Gabriel’s crowning, Althea became the first Empress of the Aurellian Empire. Her role was neither ornamental nor ceremonial in any narrow sense. She took part in the shaping of the early imperial order and remained closely involved in matters of public welfare, healing, and social reconstruction.

She supported the restoration of healer’s guilds suppressed under divine rule and advocated for legal protections affecting workers, farmers, and the poor. In the early empire, her influence was most strongly felt in those areas where governance touched daily life rather than dynastic display.

Althea also helped establish the domestic and dynastic foundation of the Aurellian line. Her children, Elira, Daniel, and Ezekiel, were raised under her care and Gabriel’s discipline, forming the first generation of the ruling bloodline that continued after them.

Final Years and Death

Althea lived thirty-one years after Gabriel’s coronation. Her later life unfolded during the earliest stable decades of the empire, when the destruction of The Godwar had begun to give way to reconstruction and continuity.

She died peacefully with Gabriel at her side. The details of her final words, if any were spoken, were never recorded publicly.

She was laid to rest in the Imperial Necropolis beside Gabriel, where she remains one of the central figures of the founding generation of the empire.

Legacy

Althea Aurellian is remembered as one of the defining figures of the early empire and as a force of stability within both Gabriel’s life and the wider imperial order.
