Torr Barradan
Torr Barradan was a Skarnn warrior, partisan commander, and one of the most influential figures of the Aurellian Rebellion. Known for his scarred face, fierce spirit, and unwavering loyalty, he played a central role in securing Grimhold and establishing the rebellion’s northern stronghold.
Though often overshadowed in formal histories by Gabriel Aurellian and Winrey Auric, Torr’s actions shaped the fate of Grimhold and the closing years of the Third Age. He was the founder of Ravenhold and the most prominent Skarnn to stand among the early figures of the Empire. His legacy endures in the lands he secured, the order he founded, and the people who followed him.
Early Life
Torr Barradan was born among the Skarnn, a hardy and deeply traditional people of the northern regions. Though smaller than most of his kin, he possessed a force of character that set him apart from an early age. He bore the blue clan markings of his people, symbols of lineage and strength. His dark hair was worn in tight braids, and a deep scar ran across his face, earned in his youth during a hunt against a Frostmaw boar.
Torr did not remain within the bounds of Skarnn life. He wandered. Among his own people he was seen as unfocused, while in the cities he was regarded as dangerous. He carried both judgments without concern.
Meeting Gabriel Aurellian
Torr met Gabriel Aurellian in the docks of Ostagar, in the taverns and back alleys where trade, violence, and survival met without order. At the time, Gabriel was a young enchanter with little to his name. Torr was already known as a brawler, smuggler, and restless presence. Their bond formed quickly. Torr supplied Gabriel with contraband materials. Gabriel pulled Torr from trouble when needed. They moved through the same spaces from different directions, and over time became inseparable. This connection would later place Torr at the center of the rebellion that reshaped the world.
When Gabriel was captured by Oculus and imprisoned beneath Ocularis, Torr was among the first to act. Working alongside Winrey Auric and the early partisans, he took part in the operation that secured Gabriel’s escape, an act that would define the rebellion’s future. In the campaigns that followed, Torr fought as a frontline combatant. He wielded an arcane-crafted firearm designed by Winrey Auric, a weapon capable of generating its own ammunition through controlled arcane ignition. Its use marked him as an outlier among the Skarnn, whose traditions favored strength and steel over innovation.
He did not reject his people. He expanded beyond them. His presence helped unify disparate groups within the rebellion, including smugglers, laborers, Skarnn fighters, and refugees fleeing divine forces.
The Guardian of Grimhold
Following the fall of Ostagar, Gabriel’s war expanded across the world. Grimhold, however, remained critical. Its terrain, its people, and its position made it essential to the survival of the rebellion. Torr was left in command of the region. His task was clear: hold the north, prevent loyalist return, and secure the alliance of the Skarnn.
He succeeded. Torr strengthened ties with the tribes of Nifleheim, secured supply routes, and transformed Grimhold into a stable northern bastion. Under his leadership, the region did not fracture, even as the wider war escalated.
The Founding of Ravenhold
Ravenhold began as a small fishing settlement along the southern cliffs of Grimhold. Under Torr’s direction, it expanded into the region’s largest harbor and a central point of trade and refuge. He fortified its position, expanded its docks, and established systems of watch and defense that allowed it to endure beyond the war. Ravenhold became known as a place that would not fall as Ostagar had.
In time, it would stand as the capital of Grimhold and one of the most important northern cities of the Empire.
Personality
Torr Barradan was known for his presence as much as his actions. He carried himself with confidence, spoke loudly, and lived without restraint. Yet beneath that surface lay discipline and clarity when it mattered most. He was fiercely loyal, openly affectionate, and capable of binding people together through force of character alone. In the darkest periods of The Godwar, his presence steadied those around him as much as his blade defended them. To Gabriel, he was a brother. To Winrey, a counterbalance. To the Skarnn, he was proof that strength could take many forms.
Family
Torr fathered many children and maintained multiple familial bonds in accordance with Skarnn tradition. His lineage spread widely across Grimhold, with many of his descendants serving among the fleets of Ravenhold. Legacy, for Torr, was not abstract. It was lived and carried forward through those who came after him.
Death
Torr Barradan lived long enough to see Grimhold stabilize and Ravenhold flourish. He died in his sleep within the longhouse he had built, surrounded by family and those closest to him. Though not a Jarl, he was buried in Chieftain’s Grove, an honor granted in recognition of his role in shaping Grimhold into a lasting homeland for the Skarnn.
